Sexual Violence: A Global Pandemic

Sexual violence is a global pandemic. One in three women experiences sexual or physical violence – most likely from their intimate partner, according to a report from the World Health Organization. There is an urgent need to increase sensitization regarding sexual violence and the awareness of consent and sexual violence amongst persons at large. In this series, we examine sexual violence and related issues that have come up in the news, on a weekly basis, published every Saturday. This is an attempt to improve awareness regarding incidents of sexual violence and related matters, so that we, as a society can take steps towards collective action to reduce its incidence. It is an effort to ensure that we acknowledge the rampant sexual violence that exists, lest we forget.

 

This issue looks at 29th December 2018 to 5th January 2019.

 

  1. Sabarimala fighting to keep women out

The famous temple in Kerela that prevents women from the age of 15-50 to enter it. This inequality has been a struggle for women of faith. Having enough over the years two women entered the temple during the night and filmed it. This was followed by a major backlash and protest from many and the temple was shut to purify it.

 

2. Coachella to do something about sexual assault

Studies show that music festivals are a big hub for sexual assault. Coachella takes steps against this by launching their initiative Every One. Their website says “We are taking deliberate steps to develop a festival culture that is safe and inclusive for everyone. Persons of any gender identity or expression, sex, sexual orientation, race, religion, age or ability are welcome at Coachella.”

 

3. A paedophile caught

Isaiah Correa, 20-year-old was caught by the authorities in New Braunfels, Texas for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl. The girl had run away from home and met Isaiah according to the arrangements he had made, he is facing first-degree charges for engaging in a sexual relationship with a kid.

 

4. Swimming instructor involved in sexual assault

A swimming instructor in New Jersey was arrested for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old over a period of two years. Kevin Guo, 24-year-old was giving lessons at Tenakill Swim Club. He is charged with two charges of sexual assault.

 

5. Foster parent turned monster

Child welfare authorities are being blamed for sexual assault for a 13-year-old under by her foster father in Assam. The government employee has been assaulting his daughter for several months now, and child welfare authorities are being disparaged for not overlooking the welfare of children who fall under their jurisdiction.
